History
The first local councils were organized through the election of council members in si, eup and myeon across the nation in 1952 in accordance with the Local Government Act enacted and proclaimed on July 4, 1949. However, the councils were forcefully disbanded by the military coup on May 16, 1961 and the history of local autonomy remained silent until 1991.
Local Council TodayThe local council we have today was finally able open with the revision of the Local Autonomy Act by Law No. 4310 on December 31, 1990. Local council elections were held across the nation on March 26, 1991 and the first Andong City Council and the first Andong County Council were opened on April 15 in the same year. On January 1, 1995, Andong City and Andong County merged to become Andong City and Andong City Council opened once again on January 5 in the same year.
The 8th Andong City Council opened on July 2, 2018 and the council members whose term ends on June 30, 2022, are currently working to improve the local autonomy system and citizens’ welfare.
